Design a New Landscape for Your Old (or not so old) House

Two one-day workshops for do-it-yourself homeowners

Create a landscape that suits both you and your house.  These workshops aim to enable you to design a plan that reflects your personal tastes, relates to the history or architectural style of your house, and matches your gardening needs. The goal is for everyone in the class to leave with a basic landscape plan and the resources to complete it.

Landscape Historian and Garden Designer Susan E. Schnare will guide you step by step through the design process.   No design or drawing skills are necessary. All materials are supplied by the instructor. Take one or both. Just bring photos and measurements of your property, the desire to create a beautiful, functional home landscape, and an interest in history and/or gardening.

Workshop 1: Layout & Project Organization
Workshop 2: Plant Choices and Horticultural Needs

Both workshops will focus on
  • Designing a plan appropriate to the historical character of your house
  • Expressing your personal tastes
  • Creating outdoor spaces that meet your needs
  • Developing design skills you never knew you had
You will learn to
  • Manage maintenance
  • Save money and time
  • Assess the site, and your needs, and resources
  • Organize achievable projects
  • Prioritize and create a timeline for your project

Please contact Susan E. Schnare to discuss arranging a workshop or for a schedule of workshops to be held at the Mountain Brook office.

Workshops are now being scheduled for 2005.
